Familiar places. New stories.

Every card links the classic symbolism of tarot to a real place and its story.

“When God was creating the world, he divided the land among all the nations. The Slovenes came last, and there was nothing left for them. So he gave them a small piece of land he had kept for himself.”
Slovenian legend · Card XXI. The World

Each of the 78 cards tells one story of this piece of land.

Card VIII. Strength

The card and its place

VIII. Strength

Dragon Bridge · Ljubljana

In one version of the legend, Jason came to Ljubljana to fight a terrible dragon. Instead of a monster, he found a small, harmless creature. Instead of fighting, he chose peace. The dragon became the protector of the city and, in time, its symbol.

Meaning: True strength is not always in winning. Sometimes it is in deciding not to fight.

Card King of Pentacles

The card and its place

King of Pentacles

Erazem of Predjama · Predjama Castle

Erazem of Predjama was a 15th-century knight who lived in Predjama Castle. According to legend, during a long siege he received food through secret cave passages. He even threw fresh cherries at his enemies to mock them and show that he had plenty of supplies.

Meaning: True wealth lies not only in owning, but also in the ability to preserve.

Three of Wands

Bled Castle · The Bishops of Brixen

In 1004, King Henry II gave the Bled estate to Bishop Albuin of Brixen. This began almost 800 years of ownership by the bishops of Brixen. The bishops rarely visited distant Bled; the castle and estates were run for them by the “knights of Bled”.

Meaning: Sometimes the best results come to those who know how to wait.

Card Four of Wands

The card and its place

Four of Wands

Saint George · Piran

According to local legend, Piran was once struck by a terrible storm that threatened the town and its people. At the most dangerous moment, Saint George appeared and calmed the raging sea. The grateful townspeople chose him as their patron saint.

Meaning: True joy grows when it is shared.

Card XVIII. The Moon

The card and its place

XVIII. The Moon

Postojna Cave · Postojna

Deep in the underground waters of Postojna Cave lives the olm, a mysterious creature with pale skin and almost blind eyes. Local legends held that these creatures were the young of a dragon hiding deep in the cave. The unknown inspired fear, and imagination turned a harmless creature into a monster.

Meaning: Not everything that is frightening in the dark is dangerous in the light.

France Prešeren and Julija Primic · Ljubljana

In 1833, the Slovenian poet France Prešeren met Julija Primic and fell unhappily in love with her. His feelings inspired the famous Wreath of Sonnets, dedicated to his beloved. A love that was never fulfilled became the source of immortal poetry.

Meaning: Even the deepest pain can turn into something beautiful.

Church of St John the Baptist · Bohinj

On the shore of Lake Bohinj stands the medieval Church of St John the Baptist. One of its remarkable frescoes shows Cain and Abel, and on Cain’s shoulder sits a rare white devil, a symbol of temptation and dark thoughts.

Meaning: Accept your mistakes and learn from them. There is always a way forward.

Card Knight of Swords

The card and its place

Knight of Swords

Rudolf Maister · Maribor

In November 1918, as Austria-Hungary collapsed, the future of Maribor was uncertain. The Slovenian officer Rudolf Maister did not wait for political decisions: he mobilised Slovenian volunteers and took control of the military forces in the city.

Meaning: One timely decision can shape the fate of a city.
